Purpose

The purpose of this series of online modules is to help prepare health professional students for rural rotations by providing general knowledge and basic skills to orient them to life and health care in rural Minnesota. The modules can be incorporated into coursework for health professions students both in the classroom and at a distance (before or during clinical rotations). The modules can also serve as a framework within which preceptors and instructors can ask students to reflect upon their experiences throughout their rotations.

Target Audience

The modules are intended for students in health professions programs in Minnesota. Topics addressed in the modules are pertinent primarily to medical, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, and physician assistant students, and secondarily, to students in the areas of public health and social work.

Modules

The series consists of three online modules:

1.   Orientation to Rural Minnesota
2.   The Role of the Health Professional in Rural Settings
3.   Building Healthy Communities

These modules can be used as stand-alone educational materials that delivered via servers at any participating institution. Interactions between students and between students and instructors are guided through “Suggested Activities” following each module, which can be completed in classroom situations and/or through email or electronic interchanges.

The modules address adult learning styles by including various media, incorporating interactive activities and self-checks, and providing options for more detail or in-depth exploration.
